Regional Workshop on the DNA Barcoding of Common Vascular Plants in the Tropics

17 to 22 April 2022 Quezon City, Philippines

Moderators:

  • Dr.Edwino S. Fernando
Professor Emeritus, University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB)
  • Dr. Ian Kendrich C. Fontanilla
Director, Institute of Biology, University of the Philippines Diliman (IB-UP Diliman)

The application of DNA barcoding technology is broad—from biodiversity research to wildlife law enforcement and has the potential to support capacity development for access and benefit-sharing. Sharing this technology and information for a region as rich in biodiversity as the ASEAN can prove to be beneficial. Learning the technology can result in tangible benefits for effective conservation, monitoring cross-border trade in wildlife and other live organisms, mitigation of the spread of invasive alien species, and monitoring and management of ecosystems.

In line with this, the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB), with support from the Government of Japan through the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF), will conduct a Regional Workshop on the DNA Barcoding of Common Vascular Plants in the Tropics. The workshop is designed to enhance the taxonomic capacity of the staff and researchers from botanic gardens, academic and research institutions, and government units working on species conservation in ASEAN.

The participants will be trained on the standardised GTI DNA barcoding protocols developed by the University of Guelph and the traditional method of taxonomic identification of vascular plants in the tropics.
