Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary

Area and Location:

It is located in the Northeastern Mindanao, Province of Agusan del Sur and covers six (6) municipalities and thirty-eight (38) barangays.

 

Description:

It is the largest and least disturbed freshwater wetland in the country.  The marsh plays an important ecological role in Caraga Region and has acomplex network of marshes, rivers, lakes and ponds.

 

Habitat Types:

Freshwater wetland with complex network of lakes, rivers, marsh and ponds

 

Unique Flora:

Sixteen (16) of the vascular plant species are endemic to the
Philippines, and eleven (11) are considered threatened.

 

Unique Fauna:

Sixty-seven (67) bird species are endemic to the Philippines, forty-eight (48) are endemic to Mindanao while 10 are threatened species. Egretta sacra (Pacific Reef Heron - Black Phase) was discovered at Lake Panlabuhan during the wetlands tour in celebration of the World Wetlands Day 2017. Thirty-four reptiles endemic to the Philippines and 11 are endemics. 

 

Ecotourism Destination and Activities:

There are eleven priority ecotourism sites ( identified in Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary, recognized for its uniqueness, aesthetic and cultural value. These sites are
Caimpugan Peatland, Lake Kasawangan, Talacogon Lake, Lake Panlabuhan, Lake Himbang, Lake Binoni, Lake Encaso and Balit-os, Lake Tugno, Lake Mambagongon, Lake Mihaba,
and Lake Ticgon and Lake Kelobidan). Seven (7) developmental clusters out of the 11 siters were identified to be developed and be part as tour destination packages. The unique features of

 

Biological Richness:
• 53 species of reptiles including two turtle species
• 2 crocodile species
• 7 geckos, six Agamid lizards
• 19 sp of skink
• 1 monitor lizard 
• 16 sp of snakes. 
• A total of 197 bird species have been recorded in Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary.
• 197 bird species;
• 240 species of vascular plants were collected and identified
