Biodiversity Conservation and Management of Protected Areas in ASEAN (BCAMP)

Background

Partner: European Union

Cost: EUR 10,000,000.00

Duration: 2017 – 2023

The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity in collaboration with the European Union is implementing the project “Biodiversity Conservation and Management of Protected Areas in ASEAN (BCAMP).” The project aims to contribute to global sustainability by ensuring ASEAN’s rich biological diversity is conserved and sustainably managed toward enhancing social, economic, and environmental well-being. The project will enhance conservation of biodiversity and effective management of protected areas in Southeast Asia to halt or significantly reduce biodiversity loss in ASEAN.

The project will be managed under three components: site level intervention in selected AHPs/PAs, enabling support at national level, and regional level intervention. While, site level intervention will be the main component of the project, the national back-up and regional level interventions are expected to provide support to the site level intervention either directly or indirectly. Under Component 1, Site Level Intervention, there will be one main output: (1) Improved Effectiveness of Biodiversity Conservation and Protected Area Management in ASEAN. Under Component 2, National Level Intervention, there will be two main outputs: (2) Knowledge and Scientific Basis for Biodiversity Conservation, especially in Existing and New ASEAN Heritage Park (AHP)/Protected Area (PA) sites developed and mobilized (3) Conservation and Protected Area Management Mainstreamed in Development Plans and the Educational System in ASEAN; and under Component 3, Regional Level Intervention, there will be one main output: (4) Capacity of ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) to support the ASEAN regional agenda and ASEAN Member States in biodiversity conservation and protected area management strengthened.

In the first five years of ACB, EU supported the establishment of the Centre and provided funds through a Financing Agreement between EU and ASEAN. The Centre is directly under the auspices of the ASEAN and governed by a board comprising of senior representatives of each AMS and the ASEAN Secretariat.
