Mt. Malindang Range

Area and Location:

Total land area of 53,028hectares, with a core zone of 34,694 hectares and buffer zone of 18,334 hectares; straddles the provinces of Misamis Occidental, Zamboanga del Norte and  Zamboanga del Sur in Mindanao.

 

Description:

Composed of seven major peaks with Mt. Malindang (2,404 meters) as the highest and Mt. Ampiro (1,532 meters) as the lowest peak; mountain range was formed through a series of volcanic activities throughout its long history; features waterfalls, crater lake and dense virgin forests.

 

Habitat Types:

Major habitats are grassland, dipterocarp forest, lower montane forest, upland wetland, and mossy and associated forest.

 

Unique Flora:

Calamus merrilii and 10 dipterocarp species including Shorea contorta, Shorea negronensis, and Shorea polysperma.  Plants with high medicinal values include sili-sili (Drimys piperita) and kalingag (Cinnamomum mercadoi); high valued ornamentals include Medinilla  malindangensis.,Caryota cuminggii; pitcher plants ; and and orchids. 

 

Unique Fauna:

Aside from the Philippine eagle, significant species in the park include the Philippine brown  deer; Philippine tarsier (Tarsius syrictha); Philippine macaque; Philippine  rufous hornbill; palm civet and civet cat; Draco volans;  flying lemur;  monitor lizard;  Malindang shrew; olive-capped flowerpecker; and Mindanao warty pig.

 

Ecotourism Destination and Activities:

The mystical Lake Duminagat which is one of the historical landmarks and ritual sites of the Subanen tribe; Malindang peaks; other activities include bird watching; hiking through nature trails to see wildlife and various attractions including rivers; waterfalls;  Sebucal Hotspring; and Piduan Falls.
